Goodwood 3.10: Two 25/1 Outsiders Turn the Celebration Mile Trends Upside Down๐Ÿ‡⤵️๐Ÿ‘‡

If you wanted an example of why race trends can be useful, the Celebration Mile provides it.

HorseRaceBase has assigned the race a Level 4 historical signal, indicating that previous editions have produced a worthwhile collection of recurring factors.

The market expects Zavateri to dominate. The Trend Hunter does not dismiss the favourite—but its two strongest profiles belong to horses trading at 25/1 and bigger.

Now we have something worth investigating.

Pina Sonata tops the Overall Fit rankings

The biggest surprise is Pina Sonata.

Despite being available at approximately 25/1, she matches 12 significant trends and records an Overall Fit of 13.19—the highest score in the field.

She sits ahead of every horse in the market, including the 6/4 favourite Zavateri.

That does not mean Pina Sonata should be favourite. Trend Hunter measures historical compatibility, not the complete balance of ability, form, pace and current wellbeing.

But when the highest-ranked trend horse is priced like a rank outsider, she cannot simply be ignored.

Arisaig matches more trends than anyone

Right beside Pina Sonata is Arisaig, another horse available at a very big price.

Arisaig matches 13 meaningful trends, the highest total in the race, and receives an Overall Fit of 13.05. She is only 0.14 points behind Pina Sonata.

Horse| Approx. odds| Trends| Overall Fit
Pina Sonata| 25/1| 12| 13.19
Arisaig| 28/1| 13| 13.05
Zavateri| 6/4| 11| 9.58
Ebts Guard| 12/1| 9| 9.18
Boiling Point| 5/1| 7| 7.32
Naqeeb| 11/1| 6| 6.25
Seagulls Eleven| 9/2| 5| 5.12
Fast Tracker| 25/1| 3| 3.33
Qirat| 13/2| 3| 3.22

The comparison could hardly be clearer. Pina Sonata and Arisaig lead both the favourite and the other principal contenders, yet the market gives each of them only a remote chance.

That is a genuine market-versus-history disagreement.

Zavateri is a credible favourite

Zavateri matches 11 trends and scores 9.58, so there is nothing inherently negative about his historical profile.

He ranks third on Overall Fit and sits comfortably ahead of most of the field. He clearly possesses many of the characteristics associated with previous Celebration Mile winners.

The issue is his price.

At 6/4, Zavateri represents an implied chance of 40%. That is a serious level of confidence in a nine-runner Group 2, particularly when two much bigger-priced rivals fit the historical shape of the race even better.

Zavateri may still be the most likely winner on form. However, the Trend Hunter does not strengthen the argument for taking a short price. If anything, it encourages us to examine the alternatives more closely.

Ebts Guard is another interesting market outsider

Ebts Guard occupies fourth place in the historical rankings, matching nine trends and recording an Overall Fit of 9.18.

That puts him almost level with Zavateri’s 9.58, yet Ebts Guard is available at approximately 12/1.

Again, Overall Fit is not a tissue price. The narrow difference in their trend scores does not mean they should be similarly priced.

It does suggest, however, that Ebts Guard’s historical profile is much stronger than his market position implies.

He may not be as spectacular a trend anomaly as Pina Sonata or Arisaig, but he is another contender whose double-figure price demands a closer look.

Boiling Point makes more appeal than the other shorter prices

Boiling Point matches seven trends and scores 7.32, placing him fifth overall.

At around 5/1, his profile is respectable rather than exceptional. He trails the leading two outsiders quite significantly, but he does rank ahead of Seagulls Eleven and Qirat, both prominent in the betting.

If his current form is persuasive, the trends offer some supporting evidence. They do not, however, make him an obvious value selection by themselves.

Naqeeb has a better profile than his price suggests

Naqeeb matches six trends and posts an Overall Fit of 6.25.

That does not put him among the strongest qualifiers, but at approximately 11/1 he arguably offers a more attractive combination of price and historical alignment than some shorter-priced runners.

His score is better than Seagulls Eleven’s 5.12 and nearly double Qirat’s 3.22.

Naqeeb is therefore another who should remain on the secondary shortlist if his form, trip and likely pace position check out.

Seagulls Eleven and Qirat look short on the trends

Seagulls Eleven is around 9/2 but matches only five trends and scores 5.12. That leaves him sixth in the historical rankings.

Qirat’s profile is weaker again. Despite trading at approximately 13/2, he matches only three trends and records the lowest Overall Fit in the field at 3.22.

These figures do not establish that either horse is a poor bet. Progressive or lightly raced horses can win because of factors the historical model cannot fully capture.

Nevertheless, the trends provide little support for their relatively prominent market positions. Both require their conventional form cases to do the heavy lifting.

Not every 25/1 chance is a trend horse

Fast Tracker provides an important contrast.

Like Pina Sonata, he is available at around 25/1. Unlike Pina Sonata, he matches only three trends and scores 3.33.

The Trend Hunter is not simply dragging outsiders to the top of the table. It strongly distinguishes between the big-priced runners:

- Pina Sonata — 13.19
- Arisaig — 13.05
- Fast Tracker — 3.33

That makes the profiles of the leading two outsiders much harder to dismiss as random noise.

What is the market missing?

The trends divide the race into three groups.

Strongest profiles

- Pina Sonata
- Arisaig
- Zavateri
- Ebts Guard

Moderate profiles

- Boiling Point
- Naqeeb
- Seagulls Eleven

Weak profiles

- Fast Tracker
- Qirat

Zavateri is the obvious form horse and a legitimate favourite, but the market has already made him pay for the privilege.

Pina Sonata and Arisaig are the opposite. Their current odds say they have little chance, while their historical profiles say they resemble previous Celebration Mile winners more closely than anything else in the field.

Trend verdict

Best Overall Fit: Pina Sonata

Most matched trends: Arisaig

Solid but short favourite: Zavateri

Double-figure contender: Ebts Guard

Weakest trend profile: Qirat

This is not enough evidence to back Pina Sonata and Arisaig blindly. Before betting, we still need to examine whether their form, ground requirements, pace positions and recent performances support the trends.

But the Trend Hunter has done its job. It has pointed away from the obvious and towards the potentially mispriced.

At around 25/1 and 28/1, Pina Sonata and Arisaig are the two horses the market may have underestimated.
