Curragh 1.53: The Favourite Fits — But the Trends Point to Bigger Prices🏇⤵️👇

The Big Race Trend Hunter has given the Newtownanner Stud Stakes a Level 5 historical signal, the strongest indication that the previous runnings have produced meaningful patterns relevant to today’s field.

That does not mean history has already selected the winner. Trends cannot measure current wellbeing, race tactics or whether a filly is about to improve significantly. What they can do is identify runners arriving with the type of profile that has succeeded here before.

And this year, the most interesting names are not necessarily those at the head of the betting.

Exceptionally tops the historical rankings

The standout trend horse is Exceptionally, who matches 11 significant signals and records an Overall Fit of 10.74—the highest figure in the field.

That immediately makes her interesting at around 16/1.

She is not automatically a bet simply because she tops this particular table. Her form, ability, likely pace position and suitability for conditions still need to withstand examination. Nevertheless, a filly with the strongest historical profile trading at a double-figure price deserves considerably more attention than the market is giving her.

If the rest of her case holds together, she may represent the clearest gap between historical suitability and market expectation.

Speckles is another hiding in plain sight

Speckles also produces an excellent profile. She matches nine trends and has an Overall Fit of 8.17, placing her close behind the favourite despite being available at approximately 12/1.

That is an important comparison.

So Lovely, the 6/4 favourite, matches eight trends and scores 8.33. Speckles therefore has almost identical historical alignment at a vastly bigger price.

This does not prove that the two possess equal winning chances. So Lovely may have stronger form, greater potential or a much more obvious route to victory. But purely through the trend lens, the difference between them is tiny. The difference in their prices certainly is not.

That makes Speckles one of the race’s most intriguing alternatives.

So Lovely passes the test

There is no major historical objection to So Lovely. Eight matched trends and an 8.33 Overall Fit represent a strong profile, confirming that the market leader possesses many of the characteristics associated with previous winners.

The trends, therefore, do not suggest that she is a vulnerable favourite.

The question is price.

At around 6/4, the market is asking us to believe she wins the race roughly four times in ten. Trend Hunter can tell us that she fits the historical shape of the contest, but it cannot establish that such a short price is value.

She is the obvious horse. She is not automatically the obvious bet.

Ballyskeagh and Damsel In Distress enter the conversation

Ballyskeagh matches seven trends and achieves an impressive 7.52 Overall Fit. At approximately 16/1, that gives her another appealing combination of a strong historical profile and a relatively generous market price.

Damsel In Distress also matches seven signals, scoring 6.77, and is trading around 12/1. Her overall fit is not quite as persuasive as Ballyskeagh’s, but she still ranks ahead of several shorter-priced runners.

Both warrant closer form analysis before being dismissed as outsiders.

Samnina is solid rather than spectacular

At around 9/2, Samnina is the second favourite. She matches six trends and posts an Overall Fit of 6.03.

That is perfectly respectable, but it falls some way short of Exceptionally, So Lovely, Speckles and Ballyskeagh.

This is where the Trend Hunter is particularly useful. Samnina may still have an excellent chance on conventional form, but the historical evidence does not strengthen her claims as dramatically as it does for some of her rivals.

At a single-figure price, we would want her broader form case to be doing most of the work.

Bellesque has market support but a weaker trend profile

Bellesque, priced at roughly 10/3, matches only four meaningful trends and records a score of 4.82.

Again, that does not mean she cannot win. Young fillies can improve rapidly, and an emerging horse may succeed precisely because she does not resemble those who came before her.

However, anyone supporting Bellesque should recognise that they are betting primarily on her current form and potential—not on a particularly compelling historical profile.

The huge outsider offers a useful warning

At around 100/1, Sword Of State matches five trends and scores 5.76. That is a better historical profile than those of several horses trading at much shorter prices.

It demonstrates why the table must not be treated as a stand-alone ratings system.

A horse can match numerous historical conditions while still lacking the required level of ability. Trends describe the shape of a contender; they do not guarantee that every horse matching that shape is fast enough to win.

What are the trends telling us?

The market leader fits the historical profile, but she is not the only one—and she may not be the most interesting one at the prices.

The runners demanding closer inspection are:

- Exceptionally — the strongest overall historical fit and available at around 16/1.
- Speckles — almost matches the favourite’s score at approximately eight times the price.
- Ballyskeagh — another strong trend horse potentially underestimated by the market.
- Damsel In Distress — a credible profile at a double-figure price.
- So Lovely — a legitimate favourite historically, although value remains the key question.

The Trend Hunter has not handed us the winner. What it has done is challenge the market’s ordering of the field.

So Lovely is the most obvious candidate, but Exceptionally and Speckles are the two names that jump off the page at their prices. Ballyskeagh is not far behind them.

That is exactly how trends should be used: not as a magic formula, but as a searchlight—pointing us towards potentially overlooked runners whose complete cases deserve a much closer look.
