This looks an ordinary summer Class 4 maiden hurdle, with the established hurdle form setting a fair rather than exceptional standard. The race revolves around two proven performers, but there are a couple of unexposed four-year-olds capable of improving beyond their current ratings.
Penzance sets the standard on demonstrated form. A dual runner-up at Stratford this summer, he has travelled well, jumped soundly and posted the strongest hurdle performances in the field. His latest second came after making much of the running before being worn down after the last. A private rating of 104 makes him the horse to beat, although his current odds leave little room for improvement.
Earnest Belief is the solid alternative. He has been placed in three of his four hurdle starts and produced a career-best effort when third at Worcester last time, briefly leading after two out before weakening close home. Rated 100, he is consistent and genuine, though he has yet to show that he can find enough when it matters most.
The most interesting runner is Bound For Glory. His hurdle debut is better than the bare result, as he travelled strongly into contention before making a costly mistake three out and another at the last. He still finished a respectable third and, as a lightly raced four-year-old, looks the runner with the greatest scope for improvement. His current rating of 98 could easily rise into the low 100s with a cleaner round of jumping.
Without Burlington brings a progressive Flat profile to hurdles after winning his last two starts on the level. While his Flat ability does not match that of Penzance, he remains an intriguing recruit and is provisionally rated 96 until he proves himself over obstacles.
Starshine Legend has yet to build on moderate hurdle efforts at Uttoxeter and Perth. He has shown enough to suggest he can win an ordinary maiden in time, but on current evidence his figure of 94 leaves him with work to do.
The remainder look to have a considerable amount to find. Happy Chandler arrives in good heart from the Flat but has to prove his stamina and jumping on debut over hurdles. Lucky Diamond, Delgany Headline and Majestic Leo have shown little in their hurdle careers so far and would need dramatic improvement to feature.

Verdict
Penzance deserves favouritism on established hurdle form, but his advantage over Earnest Belief is not overwhelming. Bound For Glory is the runner with the most appealing upside after an encouraging debut and is the one most likely to take a significant step forward. Without Burlington is respected on his Flat progression but must prove he can translate that ability to hurdles.
