This looks an interesting early-season nursery where exposed form, handicap potential and race tactics all come into play.

Koodini sets the standard on established form. Hugo Palmer's colt has finished runner-up twice before placing on his nursery debut from a mark of 70. His second in a competitive Chester novice is the strongest piece of form on offer and he has repeatedly shown himself to be genuine and consistent. The slight concern is that his mark of 69 appears to reflect his ability reasonably accurately, leaving limited room for improvement. He looks likely to run his race again but may need everything to fall right to get off the mark.

Dakota Brave is arguably the most interesting runner from a handicapping perspective. Charlie Johnston's colt has shown plenty of natural pace in his maidens, making the running on more than one occasion before fading late. His Newcastle third over seven furlongs rates well enough to suggest he is capable of better than his current mark of 66, and a track like Catterick could suit his positive racing style if he is allowed to dictate. At around 8/1, he appeals as the value alternative.

Hamdani Mokhater arrives as the market leader after an encouraging nursery debut when beaten less than a length at Leicester. That was a clear step forward and suggests a mark of 60 is workable. However, the form came in an ordinary Class 6 nursery and the current odds leave little margin for error. Further improvement is entirely possible, but the market is already assuming another step forward.

Bigalo makes his handicap debut after three educational runs in novice company. His latest effort in a stronger York novice was his best to date, but he was never seriously involved and there is little hard evidence that he is well treated from an opening mark of 64. Improvement is possible now switched into handicaps, although his current price looks to factor that in.

Predicted race shape

Dakota Brave is the obvious pace angle and is likely to go forward from the outset. Koodini is also capable of racing prominently and should be well positioned throughout, while Hamdani Mokhater is expected to sit just behind the leaders before making his challenge. If Dakota Brave secures an uncontested lead, he could prove difficult to peg back around Catterick's sharp, turning seven furlongs.

Koodini brings the strongest proven form into the race but may be vulnerable from a mark that leaves little room for manoeuvre. Hamdani Mokhater is open to further progress but looks short enough in the betting given the level of form he has achieved so far.

At the prices, Dakota Brave appeals as the value play. His maiden form suggests he has more ability than his mark of 66, and if allowed an easy lead he has the tactical profile to take a sizeable step forward. Koodini is respected as the solid benchmark, while Hamdani Mokhater rates the chief danger if building on his handicap debut.
