16:02 Carlisle – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes (Listed), 6f 195y, Good to Firm

Golden Palace Can Capitalise on Race Shape in Carlisle's Eternal Stakes

The Listed Eternal Stakes at Carlisle brings together an interesting blend of proven black-type fillies and progressive handicap performers attempting to bridge the gap into Pattern company. While the market is headed by recent Listed winner Ellusive Butterfly and the rapidly improving Albaydaa, the race may be set up for a filly arriving with a slightly stronger value profile in Golden Palace.

Ellusive Butterfly Seeks to Confirm Epsom Improvement

Karl Burke's Ellusive Butterfly arrives on the back of a career-best performance in the Surrey Stakes at Epsom, where a positive ride and a willing attitude saw her fend off challengers to land Listed honours. That victory earned her a 3lb penalty here, however, and while she is clearly progressing, she now faces a different test.

Her earlier efforts in the Fred Darling and Newmarket Listed company suggested she was useful rather than exceptional, and the question is whether the Epsom win represented a genuine step forward or a race that unfolded ideally for her. She remains a major contender but is unlikely to have things all her own way.

Albaydaa Makes the Leap from Handicap Company

Few arrive in better form than Albaydaa, who has progressed steadily through handicaps for William Haggas. Her Carlisle success over this course and distance last month was visually solid, overcoming a wide trip before proving strongest late on.

The Haggas-Marquand combination commands respect whenever stepping a horse into Listed company, and there is every chance Albaydaa has more improvement to come. The concern for punters is price rather than ability. At short odds she is being asked to prove she belongs at this level rather than exploit an established advantage.

Golden Palace Looks Ready for Another Step Forward

The filly who appeals most from a race-shape perspective is Golden Palace.

Richard Fahey's daughter of Palace Pier won her first two starts as a juvenile before being pitched into deeper waters throughout the second half of last season. Although she found Group and Listed company demanding at times, those experiences appear to have strengthened rather than discouraged her.

Her latest third in a Musselburgh Listed race was arguably her best performance yet. She stayed on strongly late, suggesting that a more strongly-run race and a stiffer finish would suit. Carlisle may provide exactly that scenario.

With Timeform forecasting a strong pace, Golden Palace should be able to settle behind the speed before using her finishing kick in the final furlong. Among the leading contenders she arguably has the most appealing combination of proven class, tactical suitability and value.

Stimulative Trip Remains an Interesting Dark Horse

David Menuisier's Stimulative Trip remains lightly raced and open to more improvement than most in the field.

A promising debut winner at Newbury last year, she has not yet fully delivered on that early promise but has competed with credit in both the Fred Darling and a French Listed race. She was not beaten far in either and may appreciate conditions that allow her to settle and finish strongly.

While she still has something to prove, she is one of the few runners whose ceiling remains largely unknown.

Others Need Improvement

Applesandpears and Just A Girl both emerge from the same Carlisle handicap won by Albaydaa and performed with credit there, but both need another step forward to trouble the principals.

Figjam has repeatedly run respectably in stronger company without quite looking good enough to win at this level, while Assaranca and Classic Cuvee appear vulnerable on recent evidence.

Confide In Me is perhaps the most interesting outsider. Lightly raced and still learning, she has shown ability in novice company and may develop into a useful filly later in the season, though this assignment looks demanding.

Predicted Race Shape

A strong pace appears likely, with several runners happiest racing prominently. That should ensure a genuinely-run contest rather than a tactical sprint, placing greater emphasis on stamina and finishing effort over the extended seven-furlong trip.

Such conditions could expose any weaknesses among the front-runners while favouring those ridden patiently.

Verdict

This looks a deeper race than the market may initially suggest. Albaydaa is the obvious improver and deserves respect, while Ellusive Butterfly brings the strongest recent piece of black-type form.

However, with the anticipated pace setup and the likelihood of further progress, Golden Palace makes the strongest appeal. Her Musselburgh effort suggested she is ready to win at this level, and Carlisle's stiffer finish could bring about a career-best performance.

Predicted Finishing Order

1. Golden Palace

2. Albaydaa

3. Ellusive Butterfly

4. Stimulative Trip

Fair Odds

Golden Palace — 4/1

Albaydaa — 7/2

Ellusive Butterfly — 5/1

Stimulative Trip — 8/1

Notebook Horses

Golden Palace – Upgrade; strong pace and stiff finish ideal.

Stimulative Trip – Tracker; remains capable of significant improvement.
