Race Snapshot
Ground: Good, good to soft places on sprint course
Runners: 8 after Sirius A non-runner
Pace forecast: Even
Key setup: Sandown 5f can punish hold-up types unless they go very hard. With no obvious burn-up forecast, tactical speed and track position matter.
This does not look a deep Listed sprint, but it is tricky because several are either returning from layoffs or still lightly raced.
Likely Race Shape
The pace looks controlled rather than strong. That is important because it makes it harder for closers to sweep through late.
Favoured by setup:
Argentine Tango, Our Cody, possibly Manatee Mehmas if ridden handy.
Potentially inconvenienced:
Military Code if held up after a long absence. Timeform’s in-running note from last time suggests he travelled like the best horse but did not fully convert.
Words Of Truth is the class angle but drops from 6f to sharp 5f carrying a 5 lb Group 2 penalty, so he needs enough pace or enough tactical pace of his own.
Runner-by-Runner Notes
1. Words Of Truth — 9/4
Classiest profile, but not bombproof.
Won three times at 6f as a juvenile and was placed in stronger races. Handles quick and softish ground. The concern is the combination of 5f, penalty, and 155-day break. His pedigree and Timeform comment suggest he should stay 7f, so this sharp 5f may not be ideal unless they go fast enough.
Memory tag: classy 6f/7f type; vulnerable over sharp 5f under penalty.
2. Manatee Mehmas — 7/1
Lightly raced and still has potential. Won a Doncaster 5f race well, then was fourth at York, beaten just over 3 lengths. That York run was not a disgrace and he should still be learning. The 5f trip is right, but he needs to find Listed-level improvement.
Memory tag: progressive 5f gelding; interesting when getting a strong, uncomplicated sprint setup.
3. Military Code — 5/2
Possibly the best raw 5f horse in the race. His juvenile form includes narrow defeats at Sandown and York, and Timeform highlight that he split subsequent Group/listed winners at York. The issue is the 294-day absence and the fact he has had chances to win similar races without always putting them away. Also, the pace setup may not be ideal if he is ridden cold.
Most likely winner if fit and sharp.
Value concern: short enough given layoff and possible tactical disadvantage.
Memory tag: talented 5f colt; travels strongly; can trade short without winning.
4. Poatan — 17/2
Unexposed and potentially better than bare figures. Third in a 21-runner Doncaster race over 6.5f reads well enough, and he has been gelded and had a breathing operation. The question is whether this sharp 5f is too quick for him, as most evidence says he wants at least 6f.
Memory tag: scopey 6f+ improver; watch after gelding/wind op, especially back up in trip.
5. Argentine Tango — 11/1
Not the sexiest profile but the race setup helps. She has been running respectably in similar company and Timeform specifically flag her as favoured by the pace/trip scenario. Six lengths or less behind in several decent races, and she gets weight from the Appleby pair. She may lack star quality, but she is battle-hardened and could sit in the right place.
Best value contender at double figures.
Memory tag: exposed but tough filly; useful when pace does not collapse; place/each-way type at 5f-6f.
6. Lady Youmzain — 6/1
Promising filly and marked horse in focus. Won well on soft at Beverley, followed up at Pontefract, then ran third in a 15-runner Haydock race over 6f. She is still open to improvement, but this is a sharper 5f test and she may want a bit more time/distance. Still respected because she receives weight and is in an improving yard.
Memory tag: progressive northern filly; wants 5f/6f with ease; still learning.
7. Our Cody — 28/1
Easy to overlook, but her latest Sandown third over this course/trip was solid enough, beaten only 1.5 lengths. She has soft and quick-ground form and may be suited by this track-position race. The problem is that her overall profile suggests she is short of Listed-winning class.
Memory tag: Sandown 5f place angle; capable of outrunning odds but likely vulnerable late.
8. Palmeira — 50/1
Usually races off the pace, which is a negative in this setup. Her best form is at 5f, and she was not beaten miles at York or Bath, but she needs several rivals to underperform. Equipment is on, but she looks more a handicap/weak Listed outsider than a win player.
Memory tag: 5f filly, needs pace collapse; downgrade when race shape favours speed.
Upgrade List
Argentine Tango — Pace setup upgrade. Receives weight, has recent runs, and should not be inconvenienced by an even tempo. More interesting than her bare form figures suggest.
Manatee Mehmas — Lightly raced 5f improver. York run may be better than it looks and he can step forward.
Lady Youmzain — Progressive filly with scope. Slight trip concern, but still open to more improvement than most.
Our Cody — Small place upgrade because of recent Sandown run and likely track-position suitability.
Downgrade List
Words Of Truth — Class horse, but 5f plus penalty looks awkward. Could win, but may be short enough.
Military Code — Ability is obvious, but long layoff and potential hold-up/tactical issue make him risky at around 5/2.
Poatan — Interesting horse, wrong-looking trip. Likely better over 6f or 6.5f.
Palmeira — Race shape against a usual off-pace runner.

Betting Verdict
This is not a strong win-bet race at the head of the market.
Military Code may well be the best horse for 5f, but around 5/2 he has enough risks: long absence, possible tactical issue, and a profile of travelling strongly without always finishing the job.
Words Of Truth is respected but looks vulnerable at 9/4 under a penalty over a sharp 5f.
The more interesting betting angle is Argentine Tango at 11/1, especially each-way or place-based, because the race shape suits and she gets weight. She may not have the upside of the favourites, but she has fewer setup concerns.
Verdict:
Small interest only: Argentine Tango each-way / place if terms are fair.
Win-only, this is close to a pass unless Military Code drifts or Argentine Tango remains double figures.
Notebook Entries
Argentine Tango — Upgrade
Even-paced 5f Listed race should suit. Not flashy, but consistent enough and favoured by tactical setup. Keep for similar 5f/6f races where closers are disadvantaged.
Military Code — Tracker / Caution
Talented 5f colt with strong juvenile form, but note “travels strongly, can trade short.” Worth following if he proves fitness, but risky at short prices after absences.
Words Of Truth — Downgrade for sharp 5f
Classy type, but probably better at 6f and possibly 7f. Penalty makes him vulnerable over minimum trip.
Poatan — Upgrade next time over further
Gelded and had breathing operation. This 5f may be too sharp. More interesting back at 6f/6.5f, especially if showing speed here.
Our Cody — Place tracker at Sandown 5f
Recent course/trip third gives her a minor angle. Not obvious win class, but can outrun big prices in similar setups.
