1m½f | Turf | Good | 12 runners
A competitive Class 3 handicap over Happy Valley’s extended mile, where course form, draw position and tactical speed are often decisive.
The market is headed by Romantic Gladiator, who finally broke through at his fifth Hong Kong start when winning over this course and distance in May. The three-year-old looked well suited by the trip that day, travelled strongly throughout and has again landed an ideal inside draw in stall 1. With Zac Purton retaining the ride and further improvement likely, he is a worthy favourite despite a 6lb rise in the handicap.
Chief among the opposition is Fivefortwo, one of the most reliable performers in this grade. He has won twice over C&D this season and has finished placed on his last two starts, proving he remains competitive from his current mark. A wider draw than ideal means he may need some luck in running, but his consistency makes him a major player once more.
The likely pace angle is Stormi, who produced his best effort for some time when narrowly denied over C&D three weeks ago. A three-time C&D winner earlier in the season, he is drawn to attack again and could prove difficult to reel in if allowed to dictate.
Violet Star represents the main closing threat. He came from off the pace to win over C&D last month and, although stall 12 is not ideal, his finishing style means he should be doing his best work late if the leaders go hard enough early.
Recent winner Legend Winner arrives in good heart after finally opening his Hong Kong account over this course and distance. He is better drawn than on that occasion but now faces a tougher assignment stepping up in grade. Mighty Commander, successful three times this season over shorter trips, also commands respect from a favourable draw with Joao Moreira aboard, though he needs to show he can produce a career-best performance at this level.
Of the remainder, Definitive is a dual C&D winner but returns from a break and must prove himself from a career-high turf mark, while veterans Keefy and Samarkand look vulnerable against younger, progressive rivals.
Race Verdict
Romantic Gladiator has the profile of a horse still ahead of the handicapper and looks set for another prominent showing from stall 1. Fivefortwo should once again be competitive, while Stormi appeals as the most dangerous value alternative if securing an uncontested lead.
Prediction:
1. Romantic Gladiator
2. Fivefortwo
3. Stormi
4. Violet Star
5. Mighty Commander
Horse to Follow: Romantic Gladiator – progressive 3yo with scope to climb higher in the grades.
